Differences between Laser and Toronto IPL Treatments

Laser and IPL (intense pulse light) are the leading options if you want a long-term solution for removing unwanted hair. Laser hair removal targets the melanin in your hair follicles to destroy the hair roots. This averts blood flow to the follicles to disable hair growth. Toronto IPL treatments use broad light spectrums of different wavelengths to focus on hair follicles and prevent blood flow to them. Though these hair removal techniques sound similar, below are the elements that differentiate them.

Area of target

When IPL or laser light enters your skin, the melanin in your hair follicles absorbs it. Lasers have concentrated light that targets specific hair follicles for the best results and more effective light absorption. On the other hand, IPL generates broader and scattered light. Though this means treating a larger area, the light does not heat hair follicles as effectively as lasers.

Number of needed sessions

Laser and Toronto IPL treatments will only treat hair follicles at the anagen phase. Lasers do not determine the growing cycle stage of hair, so they will only destroy about 10% of your existing hair follicles. You will need about 6-8 sessions for the best hair removal results. Since the light in IPL treatments is not precise, fewer hair follicles are destroyed, so you need more sessions.

Treatment time

The light beam on a laser machine is focused and thus only targets one area at a time. Conversely, the machines used for Toronto IPL treatments have large pads that mean the hair removal sessions are completed faster than laser treatments. However, a practitioner might take more time to remove the hair in a section with IPL.

There is no superior hair removal option between IPL and laser treatment. As the above information attests, the difference only lies in what they entail. They are also both safe hair removal alternatives, provided they are done by a trained professional.
